09 – 08 – 2009 REJECT SUPERSTITION
The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Mrs. Betty Mould Iddrisu has assured Ghanaians that Government will not relent in its efforts to help eradicate superstitious beliefs in the society. She said where the laws to punish people who abuse the rights of others have to be applied, the Government will do so unflinchingly. Government will as well partner with religious organizations and civil society to educate the public on the eradication of superstitious beliefs. Mrs. Iddrisu was addressing the 30th Annual National Convention of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Women’s Association, Najna Imaillah in Kumasi. The two day programme was under the theme, “Eradication of Superstitious Beliefs – Prerequisite for Social and Spiritual Development”. Mrs. Iddrisu noted that the far reaching ramifications superstitious beliefs have on the society is a cause for alarm, as it endangers efforts to build a healthy society on the foundation of hard work, goodwill, honesty and morality. She said one area of superstition that permeates the fabric of the Ghanaian society is witchcraft, adding that the Gambaga witch camp remains a dent on the country’s image as a nation that respects women. Another area of superstition that is destroying the youth, Mrs. Iddrisu mentioned is the belief that a person can get rich quick through heinous spiritual process, referred to as Sakawa. She said the fact that the country is facing some employment challenges does not in any way justify murder and kidnapping for the purpose of rituals for riches or for any other purpose. Mrs. Iddrisu said the youth must appreciate the virtues of hard work and patience and warned that the law will deal drastically with anyone who is caught perpetrating any heinous crime against humanity. The Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, Madam Anima Wilson called on Ghanaians to come together and help to eradicate any uncouth behavior and rather concentrate on acquiring modern technology and Allah’s blessings to solve problems. The National Vice President of Lajna Imaillah, Hajia Hanna Jabrael Saeed explained that the annual convention affords the Association the opportunity to make sober reflections on the roles and contributions of members as Muslim women to the economic development of the country.

WHAT IS KNOWLEDGE SOCIETY

Knowledge is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as (i) expertise, and skills acquired by a person through experience or education; the theoretical or practical understanding of a subject, (ii) what is known in a particular field or in total; facts and information or (iii) awareness or familiarity gained by experience of a fact or situation. Philosophical debates in general start with Plato's formulation of knowledge as "justified true belief".

the term Knowledge Society refers to any society where knowledge is the primary production resource instead of capital and labour. It may also refer to the use a certain society gives to information. A Knowledge society "creates, shares and uses knowledge for the prosperity and well-being of its people".

A society that creates, shares and uses knowledge for the prosperity and well-being of its people.

Characteristics

Knowledge societies have the characteristic that knowledge forms a major component of any human activity. Economic, social, cultural, and all other human activities become dependent on a huge volume of knowledge and information. A knowledge society is one in which knowledge becomes a major creative force.

Knowledge societies are not a new occurrence. For example, fishermen have long shared the knowledge of predicting the weather to their community and this knowledge gets added to the social capital of the community.

What is new is that

  • With current technologies, knowledge societies need not be constrained by geographic proximity
  • Current technology offers much more possibilities for sharing, archiving and retrieving knowledge
  • Knowledge has become the most important capital in the present age, and hence the success of any society lies in harnessing it.

Information Society is a term for a society in which the creation, distribution, and manipulation of information has become the most significant economic and cultural activity. An Information Society may be contrasted with societies in which the economic underpinning is primarily Industrial or Agrarian. The machine tools of the Information Society are computers and telecommunications, rather than lathes or ploughs.

CHILD LABOUR IN GHANA

Child Labor is a widespread phenomenon in the developing world. The cause of this which has been narrowed poverty, do not convincingly show on data. Child labor prevents victims from participating in the education process. it has also increased tremendously of which Ghana is included.Victims in the Ghanaian society end up in stone quarries and sand weaning sites, and also as hawkers in the cities streets.
In Ghana, a lot of factors contributes to the problem of child labor. It includes poverty, irrelevance of education, high cost of schooling, etc. Parents should note that, ensuring the proper upbringing of their wards is neither the responsibility of the mother nor the father, but rather both.
It is so disheartening to see children of school going age selling all sort of items under the scorching sun and in the rain. Often these children become victims of sexual harassment, drug abuse and are sometimes knocked down by careless drivers, an incident that happened not long ago on the Kasoa road.
In other cases, responsibility towards children comes to a halt as soon as parents realize that their wards are capable of taking care of themselves regardless of their age. This often result in child labor, simply because the child has to find a job in order to be a survivor.
I think the most effective way of reducing child labor is the Increase demand for schooling.
